Thessaloniki dump to close amid health concerns
The municipal council in Lagadas, near Thessaloniki, voted on Thursday to force the closure of the northern city’s only garbage dump for two days due to concerns about the environmental impact of the waste center.
Alternate Environment Minister Yiannis Tsironis pledged to call in environmental inspectors at the Mavrorachi dump.
“Residents are justifiably concerned but the best way to deal with this is through dialogue and not confrontation,” he said. “The state will carry out a proper environmental inspection.”
