Ship carrying 6,000 boxes of contraband cigarettes seized

Coast guard officers in the southern Peloponnese on Friday stopped and seized a Tanzanian-flagged cargo ship that was carrying 6,000 cardboard boxes of contraband cigarettes in the Bay of Messinia.

The six-member crew of the ship, which was stopped while sailing past the town of Koroni, are being questioned by authorities after the ship was led to the port of Kalamata to be searched further.

The exact number of cigarettes and their value has yet to be determined.

The operation earned the praise of Alternate Shipping Minister Theodoris Dritsas, who congratulated the coast guard on a job well done
