Tsipras meets with Theodorakis to explain gov’t actions

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met with composer and political activist Mikis Theodorakis (photo) in Athens on Tuesday in the wake of the latter’s comments on Sunday urging the leftist leader to turn down austerity demands by the country’s foreign lenders.

“You can’t just walk into your enemy’s trap; you need to maneuver,” Tsipras told the leader of the Spitha (Spark) political movement.

In a letter posted on his personal website on Sunday, Theodorakis urged Tsipras “to say ‘no’ to the German ‘neins.’”

Theodorakis’s criticism echoed that of veteran member of SYRIZA, MEP Manolis Glezos, who complained that recent eurozone agreement marked a reversal of the party’s election promises.

“I apologize to the Greek people because I have contributed to this illusion,” said the former WWII resistance fighter.
