Greece sued over poor waste water treatment

The European Commission announced on Thursday its decision to take Greece to the EU’s Court of Justice over poor waste water treatment presenting a risk to public health.

According to a statement released by the Commission, Greece has failed to ensure that waste water is properly treated. Greece received a first warning on the subject in 2010, for areas with populations between 2,000 and 15,000 residents.

“Although many of the original concerns have since been addressed, the scale of the remaining problems has now led the Commission to refer the case to the EU’s Court of Justice,” the statement read.

In a separate development, experts examining a former landfill on the Ionian island of Zakynthos said that the area was now free of pollution. Greece was convicted last year by the European court over the illegal landfill located on the nesting ground of the Mediterranean loggerhead turtle known as Caretta caretta.
