Prominent seismologist and PASOK MEP, Giorgos Stavrakakis, dies

Prominent seismologist and former PASOK Euro MP Giorgos Stavrakakis died on Friday at the age of 60.

Stavrakakis worked as a seismologist and researcher at the Geodynamic Institute of the Athens Observatory from 1989 to 1994, becoming director from 1995 to 2008.

He was also active in civil protection initiatives and bodies, designing systems and technologies against earthquakes.

He was elected to the European Parliament in 2009.

PASOK chief Evangelos Venizelos on Friday described Stavrakakis as a “brilliant scientist and a man of stature.” Stavrakakis’s funeral will be held on Saturday in Melissia, northern Athens.
