Ex-Public Order Minister questions police policy after Athens riot

Former Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias asked the government to clarify whether it has changed the police’s approach to containing riots after four shops, three cars and several bus stops were damaged or destroyed by rioters in central Athens on Thursday night.

The New Democracy MP submitted a question to Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis, asking whether the police’s apparent failure to restrain the rioters was the result of “a conscious choice on the part of the government, an accident or indifferent monitoring of the violence in the city center.”

Nobody was injured during the rioting, which ended at around 11 p.m.
