Attica downpour leaves Mandra floundering

The Attica Regional Authority on Friday asked the Civil Protection Authority to declare a state of emergency in Mandra, western Attica, after flash flooding late on Thursday caused widespread damage in the area.

A number of cars were swept away during the heavy rainfall and the fire service received 45 calls for assistance. Firefighters had to rescue six people from their homes after they became trapped by the water, which was as deep as 1 meter in parts.

On Friday, 40 firefighters worked from the morning until the afternoon pumping water out of homes and businesses.

Attica Governor Rena Dourou said on Friday that all the regional services would remain on standby to deal with any problems from flooding. More rain has been forecast for this weekend.
