Flooding in Serres after river bursts its banks
Fields in Serres, northern Greece, have been flooded after the Strymonas River burst its banks on Sunday.
The flooding has taken place in the Municipality of Visaltia. Local authorities said that flood defences built by the army were not able to withstand the rising water level. Local livestock farmers are concerned about the impact the flooding will have on their livelihoods.
Authorities are also on alert for the possible of flooding of Lake Kerkini in northern Greece. The Strymonas River, which flows from Bulgaria, is the artificial reservoir’s main inflow.
