GD MP acquitted after mugging witnesses fail to show up

Golden Dawn MP Artemis Matthaiopoulos and another suspect were cleared on Friday of mugging a man at the Ancient Agora in Athens 10 years ago after two firefighters who witnessed the incident failed to appear as witnesses in court.

Matthaipoulos and co-defendant Anastasios Triantafyllou were accused of beating a man and stealing his bag in 2005 with two minors, including the cousin of another Golden Dawn MP, Ilias Kasidiaris.

Three or the four suspects were detained but the two firefighters who assisted police were unable to attend the trial as they are no longer working in Athens.

According to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, Matthaiopoulos patted the plaintiff on the back as he left the courtroom and said: “Bye. See you around.”
