Stamati to undergo psychiatric evaluation

A psychiatrist is expected to examine Viki Stamati after she was found on Friday wandering around a churchyard near the psychiatric facility she escaped from, amid concerns that her mental health may be deteriorating dangerously.

Stamati broke out of Dromokaitio Hospital on Thursday, where she had been transferred from prison after several incidents indicating she may be suffering from depression. According to reports, a witness saw her in the churchyard and heard her muttering, “I must see my child now.” He alerted her lawyer, who, in turn, notified the authorities that she had been found.

Counsel Frangiskos Ragousis said Stamati had not been taking her medication and was “in a pitiable psychological state.”

Stamati, who has been convicted for embezzlement and money laundering along with her husband, former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, has made several appeals for release, asking to be reunited with her young son.
