Minister warns gold mine clashes could lead to deaths
Alternate Minister for Citizens’ Protection Yiannis Panousis warned on Monday that protests regarding the Skouries gold mine in northern Greece could lead to someone being killed.
“We’re going to see deaths in Skouries,” said Panousis during a press conference on Monday to unveil a memorandum of understanding with Attica Regional Authority.
Miners continued their protests in Halkidiki on Monday after a day of tension on Sunday.
Supporters of the project as well as opponents protested on Sunday. Miners alleged that anti-mine demonstrators damaged two cars and a truck during a protest in the village of Ierissos.
