Athens mayor heralds city revamp

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis on Monday presented a “growth program” for the city that aims to gentrify the capital’s commercial center in a bid to capitalize on an upturn in tourism while also attracting investments.

The planned revamp, dubbed “A return to Athens 2015-2020,” is to focus on the area sketched out by Praxitelous, Lekka, Pericleous-Athinaidos and Aiolou streets, and is to include pedestrianization and the improvement of street lighting.

Also authorities are to use European funding to exploit 1,800 derelict buildings. “We want Greece to be a destination not only for tourists but also for residents, for professionals, for investments, for young people,” Kaminis said.
