Seven people die off Symi coast trying to get into Greece

Seven people were confirmed dead and nine were rescued on Monday by the Turkish coast guard, east of the Greek island Symi, in the southeastern Aegean, the Athens-Macedonian News Agency reported on Tuesday.

According to Turkish authorities the victims were part of a group of 20 Syrians and Iraqis trying to enter Greece without papers. They were also wearing life vests, the Turkish coast guard said.

Both Greek and Turkish coast guard patrols are conducting searches in the area to determine the whereabouts of the other passengers.
