One migrant dies in Igoumenitsa, 164 rescued at sea

A 21-year-old Afghan migrant crawled under an Italy-bound bus in an attempt to smuggle himself out of the country, but was killed when his body was caught in the axle of the vehicle.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday at Greece’s northwestern port of Igoumenitsa.

The young man apparently hid under the truck as it waited to board a ferry bound for the Italian port of Bari during a coast guard inspection.

Meanwhile, coast guard officers in the eastern Aegean on Wednesday intercepted a total of 164 undocumented immigrants – 103 in three different incidents off Lesvos, 46 off Chios and 15 off Leros.
