Migrant dies trying to enter Greece by land during floods

Greek authorities say they have found the body of a migrant who apparently drowned during floods as he tried to illegally enter the country from Turkey.

The unidentified young man’s body was found Thursday near the banks of the Evros River on Greeces northeastern border with Turkey. Police believe he died about a month ago.

The number of people — mostly Syrian war refugees but also migrants from many Middle Eastern and African countries — entering Greece illegally has nearly tripled this year. Most make the perilous crossing by sea, paying smuggling gangs to ferry them over from Turkey in unseaworthy boats.

During the past 24 hours, authorities safely picked up 262 migrants in two separate incidents in the Aegean Sea. [Reuters]
