Jewish group wants Athens art show closed

A Jewish human rights group yesterday condemned an Athens art exhibition depicting a pregnant woman blown up by a suicide bomber in an Israeli supermarket, and urged Prime Minister Costas Simitis to shut it down. The Paris-based Simon Wiesenthal center warned in a letter to Simitis that the exhibition titled «Body Milk» would increase the «prospect of terrorism in the context of the approaching (Athens 2004) Olympics.» Artist Alexandros Psychoulis said the show was meant to look into the relationship of women and supermarkets. «Politics are not a part of this work,» he told the daily Ta Nea. The exhibition, which opens later this month, consists of scenes depicting a pregnant woman shopping in an Israeli supermarket, a Palestinian explosives belt, and the supermarket after the blast, in which body parts are visible.
