Son’s ‘spy’ tricks embarrass MP

A New Democracy MP resigned from the conservative main opposition party’s parliamentary group yesterday – but declined to relinquish his seat – after his son was arrested, for the second time in seven weeks, for petty crime. Attica MP Theodoros Katsikis, 67, said he had decided to resign, in order to protect ND from «exploitation» of his son’s alleged behavior «which could harm the party.» The father of six will stay on as an independent MP. The deputy’s 22-year-old son, Solon, was arrested with another three youths early yesterday on charges of stopping Athens motorists outside the state ERT television headquarters on Mesogeion Avenue and, on the pretext of being secret intelligence agents, demanding to check their papers. Katsikis was also charged with possession of a penknife. His father claimed the youth was innocent. In September, Athens police arrested Solon Katsikis with two Albanian friends in his father’s official car after officers found the one Albanian to be in possession of a small quantity of marijuana. Katsikis was cleared of any wrongdoing.
