Spate of Athens bank heists, 69,000 stolen

Armed robbers carried out a string of heists at four Athens banks yesterday morning, netting a cumulative 69,000 euros. No arrests were made. The most lucrative robbery of the day was at an Emporiki branch on the corner of Pendelis and Aiantos streets in the northern suburb of Vrilissia, where a single gunman grabbed 50,000 euros before making his escape on foot just after 9 a.m. An hour earlier, two masked men had burst into another Emporiki branch at 70 Pireos Street, in the city center, but netted no more than 1,000 euros. Around 9.40 a.m., police were summoned to the site of a third heist, at a Eurobank branch on the corner of Poseidonos and Afxentiou streets in the southern suburb of Alimos, from which two gunmen stole 12,000 euros. The last robbery of the day was at an Alpha Bank branch at 46 Veikou St in Kypseli, from which two men took 6,000 euros.
