The drivers’ survival guide to Neo Faliron during roadworks

Drivers venturing into the triangle formed by Poseidonos, Pireos and Kifissou avenues during the next six months will need patience. Long-term roadworks scheduled to start Sunday and continue till late May are set to rearrange all the familiar routes. Construction work necessitated by the Peace and Friendship Stadium split-level interchange will turn the surrounding area into an immense road puzzle. Traffic on Poseidonos Avenue between Tzavella Street and Kifissou Avenue will be diverted, and the areas being blocked off include the Karaiskaki Stadium bridge, which currently connects Pireos with Poseidonos. Given that all the main roads in the area will be blocked off until the roadworks are complete, the thousands of cars that travel along these arteries every day will fan out onto other roads from the center of Moschato and Faliron and the suburbs of Piraeus. The Public Works Ministry has made an announcement acknowledging that the roadworks will seriously inconvenience drivers and residents, but emphasizing that the new interchange is «an exceptionally complex project, whose completion will link Kifissou directly with the seafront and decongest traffic in the surrounding area.» But until May there will be traffic problems. The following driver survival guidelines suggest alternative routes. From Kifissou Avenue to Poseidonos Avenue: From Kifissou, turn right at Pireos, left at G. Lambraki, left at Pylis, right at Tzavella and go straight ahead to Poseidonos. From Retsina, Kononos, E. Makariou to A. Papandreou, Pireos: From E. Makariou, go straight along G. Papandreou and right toward Pireos, or go right at Karaoli and Dimitriou, and right or left into Pireos.
