Snow, winds across Greece

Heavy snowfall – as well as the return of taxis to the streets after a weeklong strike and demonstrations in the center – brought traffic to a crawl throughout many parts of Attica yesterday. Residents of the northern suburbs woke to a thick blanket of snow on the ground although local authorities around the lower slopes of the mountains of Parnitha and Pendeli had cleared the streets of snow and had scattered salt by early morning. Schools were closed in many areas in northeastern Attica and there were power cuts for several hours, chiefly in Thrakomakedones, Menidi, Kryoneri and Kapandriti. Light snow fell in central and southern Athens but did not settle due to strong northerly winds. The Athens-Lamia highway at Malakasa was blocked by snow and long-haul trucks that had got into difficulties. Snow fell across half the country yesterday, while passenger ferries to the Aegean islands, Crete and the Dodecanese were kept in port by strong winds. The weather bureau predicted an improvement in conditions today.
