Rescuers called after 60 hikers become trapped in Crete’s Samaria Gorge

A rescue operation was underway in Crete on Wednesday morning after 60 hikers were trapped in the 16-kilometer long Samaria Gorge overnight.

The hikers were hampered in their efforts by heavy rain and had to spend the night at the Samaria settlement. All the hikers were reported to be safe and well.

Samaria Gorge, located in Hania on Crete’s southern coast, is the island’s most popular natural. It has been listed for protection and declared a national park since 1962.
