Police officer accused of illegally detaining, beating Pakistani man
A 29-year-old police officer was charged on Friday with illegally detaining and beating a 44-year-old Pakistani national in downtown Athens earlier in the week.
The 44-year-old told investigators that he was assaulted by a group of Bangladeshi men and taken by force to a shop owned by a compatriot of theirs.
There, he said, his assailants called the police officer, who arrived shortly after and used his position to intimidate the Pakistani man, also beating him.
The assailants were demanding 18,000 euros from the 44-year-old, allegedly to settle a debt.
