Customs seizes 12.3 million illegal cigarettes at Piraeus port

Customs officials arrested a 30-year-old Armenian man at Piraeus port on Friday after discovering more than 1,230 cardboard boxes of contraband cigarettes in a shipping container that had arrived from China.

The cigarettes were hidden at the back of the container, which was carrying clothes. Authorities said that a total of 12.3 million cigarettes were seized and that the state would have missed out on revenues of 2.2 million euros if the contraband had reached the market.
