Vouliagmeni lifeguard taken into custody on child pornography charges

A 49-year-old former lifeguard was taken into custody on child pornography charges following his testimony on Wednesday.

The suspect, identified as Ioannis Douros, had been arrested for allegedly shooting pictures and videos of naked children on Vouliagmeni Beach, southern Athens. He had reportedly worked as a lifeguard for several seasons at the beach until 2012 and was a member of staff in 2013.

Investigators discovered child pornography during a raid of the suspect’s home.

During his testimony on Wednesday, the suspect said he had never come into contact with any children. He said he started to download pornographic material after an operation left him with an erectile dysfunction.

Authorities said the suspect will be transferred to Tripoli jail.
