Syrian arrested on Greek border investigated for jihadist ties
A 28-year-old Syrian national who was arrested at the Kipoi border crossing in Evros over the weekend after police found more than 95,000 rounds of ammunition hidden in special compartments in his car, is being detained in Alexandroupoli as police and intelligence officials suspect he might have jihadist connections, Kathimerini understands.
The man had been traveling with papers issued in Austria where he appears to have been granted protection as a political refugee.
On trying to enter Greece, the suspect presented authorities with a forged British driving license.
Police and the country’s National Intelligence Service (EYP) are on the alert amid fears that jihadists are sneaking into the country in an influx of undocumented immigrants via Greece’s land and sea borders.
