Police find second safe house used by bank robbers

Police are hoping that the discovery of a second safe house near Volos, central Greece, used by two bank robbers caught on Friday, may provide clues regarding the whereabouts of other wanted criminals with links to urban guerrilla groups, such as Giorgos Petrakakos, Marios Seisidis and even infamous fugitive Vassilis Palaiocostas.

Officers from the anti-terrorism squad raided the house in Ano Lechonia on Tuesday after searching the premises they raided in another village on Friday. Police arrested two men in the first raid, Spyros Christodoulou and Giorgios Tsironis. A third, Spyros Dravilas, was found dead. Police suspect he killed himself to avoid being caught.

Dravilas and Christodoulou were suspected of carrying out a 400,000-euro robbery last year. Tsironis is suspected of being a member of the so-called “Robbers in Black.”

Police said that they found bundles of cash, a laptop, diagrams and maps at the property in Ano Lechonia, which had been rented by a man identifying himself as Dimitris Zervas, most likely by using a fake or stolen identification card.

The owner of the house told officers that a woman accompanied the tenant when he viewed the property. Police noted that a woman was spotted among robbers at two major bank heists in 2011 and 2012 and among the suspects during terrorist attacks on New Democracy’s headquarters in 2013 as well as the Israeli Embassy in December.
