DIMAR elects 36-year-old as new party leader

Thanasis Theocharopoulos, 36, was elected the new leader of small centre-left party Democratic Left (DIMAR) on Sunday.

DIMAR was part of the previous coalition government between June 2012 and June 2013 but failed to enter Parliament in January’s elections, where it gained just under 0.50 percent of the vote.

Theocharopoulos, who received a congratulatory phone call from New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras, is an economist and succeeds veteran leftist Fotis Kouvelis. The new party chief previously served as secretary of DIMAR’s central committee.
