Inmates freed following implementation of new law

A total of 2,162 prisoners benefiting from legislation aimed at decongesting local correctional facilities have been released from prisons across Greece in the last month and a half, Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos announced on Tuesday.

Those released included 1,400 convicted for less serious crimes who had already served an undisclosed portion of their sentence, as well as 367 foreigners who had spent months in detention because authorities could not deport them, minors and people with disabilities.

The new measure saw a number of convicts detained at police precincts being tranferred to prisons, noted the minister, who said the number of those detained across the country now stood at 10,300 prisoners.
