Toxic chemicals at apple orchards

Tests conducted by Greenpeace on apple orchards across Greece have revealed a toxic cocktail of pesticide residues, a report by the environmental group said on Tuesday.

After analyzing water and soil samples from Corinthia, Imathia and Arcadia, experts identified five “persistent” industrial agricultural chemicals (meaning that they do not break down in the soil), including Dieldrin, which is banned in the European Union.

Greenpeace called on Alternate Minister for Agricultural Development Vangelis Apostolou to take action against the use of hazardous pesticides, starting with a ban of glyphosate, considered as “possibly carcinogenic for humans” by the World Health Organization (WHO).
