Mayor accuses former PM of being a traitor over memorandum

Former Prime Minister George Papandreou found himself on the receiving end of a verbal attack from outspoken Volos Mayor Achilleas Beos while visiting the city on Thursday.

According to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, Beos accused Papandreou of being a traitor for signing up to the EU-IMF bailout in 2010. The former premier’s bodyguards were forced to intervene and there was a brief scuffle with people from the mayor’s entourage.

Papandreou was in Volos, central Greece, to speak to the members of the party he launched in January, the Movement of Democratic Socialists.

Beos is a former soccer club chairman who stood as an independent in last year’s local elections.
