Teachers scoff at plan for conscripts to help with school staff shortages
Greece’s secondary school teachers’ union (OLME) dismissed as a “joke” on Thursday the idea of conscripts in the armed forces helping plug teacher shortages at schools.
The idea of conscripts who have teaching qualifications being dispatched to schools in the areas where they are carrying out their military service was discussed during a meeting between Defense Minister Panos Kammenos and Education Minister Aristides Baltas.
OLME, however, dismissed the idea. It is expected that there will a shortage of some 25,000 teachers in the next academic year.
