Outgoing alternate finance minister denies big bank withdrawal before controls

Finance Minister Nadia Valavani rejected claims on Wednesday that she made a large withdrawal from a bank on Crete shortly before capital controls were imposed.

Valavani said that she does not have a bank account on Crete and that her savings are in an account in Athens which she has not had access to since banking restrictions were introduced more than two weeks ago.

Her statement came in response to a question in Parliament from New Democracy MP Lefteris Avgenakis, who quoted a news story that did not name Valavani but alleged that a prominent government member withdrew 200,000 euros before the bank holiday.

The minister resigned from the government Wednesday after deciding she would not vote for the measures demanded by lenders as part of Greece’s new bailout program.
