Four blazes stretch firefighters’ resources

Firefighters on Thursday battled four large blazes in different parts of the country, their task hampered by high temperatures and strong winds.

One fire on forestland near the village of Apollona, in northern Rhodes, was burning into the evening as 24 firefighters on the ground struggled to douse it with the help of two helicopters.

Firefighters were also battling to contain a large blaze that broke out in a pine forest near the Cave of Attali on Evia with 42 firemen on the ground and two aircraft assisting their efforts.

A third forest fire in the municipality of Andritsaina-Krestena in the prefecture of Ileia had been brought under partial control by late afternoon.

The fourth fire which broke out in the region of Magoula, western Attica, in the morning had been contained by the evening before it could approach residential areas.
