Single migrant smuggling operation nets 200,000 euros

A single operation to smuggle 110 Syrians from Turkey into Greece, netted the trafficking gang that arranged their transport 200,000 euros, police said following the arrest on Saturday of a truck driver who had allegedly picked up the undocumented migrants on the Greek-Turkish border.

Authorities arrested the Turkish national on the Egnatia Odos highway in northern Greece after receiving calls from motorists who said the truck appeared suspicious.

The migrants aboard the vehicle, among whom there were 39 children, told investigators they had paid traffickers 1,800 euros per head to get them across the Greek-Turkish border, where they waited three days for the truck to pick them up.
