Some 20,000 teaching gaps need filling at schools before year starts

Greek schools are short of some 20,000 teachers, Education Minister Aristides Baltas said on Monday. But he added that European Union funds would be used to hire 10,000 substitute teachers for the new academic year to soften the impact of the shortages.

He said that he would meet on Tuesday with Economy Minister Giorgos Stathakis to see if the funds for the hiring of another 5,000 teachers could be found.

Baltas added in his interview on public broadcaster ERT that due to a lack of money the government cannot carry through with its plan to hire 2,500 to 3,000 teachers.
