Terrible truth
The number of road accidents may have gone down in the first half of the year compared to 2014, but the number of those who died or were seriously injured on Greek roads went up, according to data released by the traffic police on Tuesday.
There is a way to explain this paradox but in general terms it is due to the lawlessness that prevails in almost every area of society and, of course, to inadequate policing.
The high speed limits allowed inside urban centers in combination with a tendency to flout these, as well as to ignore other rules and regulations, have made crashes and related accidents much more deadly. The consequences are terrible and when statistics confirm this, it is the duty of the state to find solutions, to impose laws and to move beyond rhetoric to action.
A return to the days when the population of a small town was killed on the country’s roads every year is simply unacceptable.
