Two children drown in separate incidents on Thursday

Two children drowned in separate incidents on Thursday, one on the holiday island of Crete and the other in the seaside resort of Loutsa, near Athens, the state-run Athens-Macedonian News Agency reported on Friday.

In Crete, an 8-year-old girl died at the swimming pool of a hotel in Hania. The child was taken to a local hospital after efforts were made to resuscitate her but doctors declared her dead on arrival.

The second incident occurred in Loutsa, eastern Attica, and involved a 0-year-old girl who had gone to the beach with her mother. A relative of the child saw her floating in the water and notified the ambulance service and the coast guard, which confirmed that she had died.

Parents and chaperones are advised to ensure that children are never left unattended, whether in a swimming pool or at a beach.
