More than 150 migrants reach Kos on several boats

Over 150 migrants in at least six boats have arrived at the shores of the Greek island of Kos.

Some 40 Syrians waved and cheered as their boat arrived Monday at Kos, which is a popular tourist destination.

Men jumped overboard to help women and children off the dinghy with one man so overcome with emotion that he began to sob.

The new arrivals add to the 124,000 migrants who have reached Greece by boat in the first seven months of 2015 alone, a staggering 750 percent increase from the same period last year, according to the United Nations' refugee agency. Just in July, there were 50,000 arrivals, about 70 percent from Syria.

Most land on the five islands Lesbos, Chios, Kos, Samos and Leros, the UNHCR said Friday.
