Corfu escapees covered cell doors with curtains

A group of convicts from Corfu Prison, whose escape tunnel was discovered on Saturday, had curtains covering their cell doors, according to new details about their thwarted plan that emerged on Monday.

According to the head of the prison, who testified before a prosecutor yesterday, makeshift knifes and digging tools were found in their cells.

The prisoners had been hiding earth from their dig under the beds in their cells, he added.

It also emerged that the prisoners had been literally inches from freedom when their plan was thwarted on Saturday morning.

A man walking his dog near the prison heard the sounds of digging underground after his pet stopped at the spot.
