Varoufakis takes distance from Popular Unity party

Former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has ruled out joining a new anti-bailout party that broke away from SYRIZA last week.

“For them, the return to the drachma is a question of ideology,” Varoufakis said of Popular Unity, led by former energy minister Panayiotis Lafazanis, in an interview with Die Welt to be published Monday.

Although it would be better to stay in the euro however, Varoufakis said, Greece should not try to do so “at any price.”

“Currencies are not ends in themselves,” he told Die Welt.

Popular Unity will get a shot Monday at forging a government just three days after setting up their party, even as their leader admitted they’ll fail, paving the way for a formal election campaign this week.
