Golden Dawn MP, cell leader released from custody

Golden Dawn deputy Nikos Kouzilos has been released from custody where he had been awaiting trial on a number of criminal charges along with dozens of other MPs and members of the neofascist party.

However, the council of appeals court judges banned Kouzilos from leaving the Attica region, while ordering him to report to his local police station twice a month.

The Golden Dawn MP was also banned from attending any party events, although he will be allowed to carry out his parliamentary duties. In a separate ruling, judges ordered the release of Giorgos Patelis, the head of Golden Dawn’s cell in Nikaia, southern Athens.

Patelis, who was being held on charges of being a member of a criminal gang is also facing a separate charge of being an accomplice to the murder of rapper Pavlos Fyssas in September 2003.

Patelis too was banned from leaving the country and must report to his local police station twice a month. The GD trial, taking place at the maximum-security Korydallos Prison, will resume on September 9.
