Ex-House speaker says he’s the victim of a frame-up

Former deputy parliamentary speaker Alexis Mitropoulos said on Monday he is waiting for SYRIZA chief Alexis Tsipras to decide whether to include him on the party ballot in the September 20 elections.

Mitropoulos’s candidacy came into doubt after the Supreme Court last week asked for his immunity from prosecution to be lifted over allegations that the former lawyer had received a large fee more than a decade ago and did not declare it to tax authorities.

Mitropoulos has denied the charges and called a press conference on Monday to present “evidence” that he says further backs his claimed innocence. He said he is the victim of a “political frame-up,” claiming he has come under attack from within SYRIZA for objecting to the bailout deal signed by Tsipras.
