Man accused of murdering Thessaloniki jeweler remanded

The 38-year-old robber who shot and killed a jeweler in Thessaloniki on Tuesday was remanded in custody Friday after he failed to convince a prosecutor in the northern port city that his gun backfired when the victim attempted to wrest it form his hands.

The incident was witnessed by the jeweler’s mother, who told police that the robber had deliberately shot her son, who died a day later from the serious abdominal wound he suffered.

The robber had been released from jail after serving a sentence for a previous crime just a month ago.
