Ex-New Democracy minister ordered to pay damages to Attica Governor Dourou over false claims

Former New Democracy MP Argyris Dinopoulos, who has served as interior minister, has been ordered to pay 60,000 euros in damages for defaming Attica Governor Rena Dourou.

The first instance court found that Dinopoulos had incorrectly claimed Dourou was once an adviser to ex-Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who is now serving a jail sentence for money laundering in connection to crooked arms deals.

Dourou, a SYRIZA member, took action against Dinopoulos after he made the claim on a television show last year. The Attica governor insists that she was never employed by Tsochatzopoulos but that she did work as a freelancer for an institute run by the Defense Ministry.

The first instance court verdict is being appealed by Dinopoulos.
