Ex PM throws weight behind Meimarakis

In a rare statement, delivered just a few days before early elections, former prime minister Costas Karamanlis on Wednesday urged voters to back New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis.

“Elections on September 20 are a critical milestone for the country. No more time can be wasted and it would be unthinkable for the big sacrifices of the Greek people to go to waste,” Karamanlis said stressing the need for daring reforms to spur growth and pull the nation out of the economic crisis.

“On September 21 the country will need an efficient government enjoying a broad social consensus,” said Karamanlis adding that victory for ND under Meimarakis is key for political and economic stability.

New Democracy received a 27.5 percent support rate, narrowly beating leftist SYRIZA's 27.0 percent, in the latest poll by Pulse for Action 24 TV, Tuesday.
