Nine more gold mine protesters released

Another nine residents of Halkidiki, northern Greece, who are part of a movement against local gold mines were released on Thursday after facing a magistrate in Polydoros.

Their release followed that of 13 others on Wednesday.

The 22 are accused of being involved in protests outside the town hall in Ierissos in March 2012 that turned violent and face charges including arson, possessing explosives, attempted bodily harm and causing damage. They deny all the charges.

Of the 22, 10 have been ordered not to leave the country. A judicial council is to decide whether the 22 should be indicted.
