Kavala municipal councilor arrested for abusing dog
A 68-year-old councilor in the Municipality of Paggaio in Kavala, northern Greece, was arrested on Tuesday following the publication of a home video showing him beating his dog.
The video, which was shot by a neighbor, clearly shows the 68-year-old man standing over the chained dog in his home's garden and hitting the yelping animal repeatedly with a stick or cane, shouting “eat it!”
Three women are shown arriving at the scene and putting a stop to the abuse, with one elderly woman pushing the 68-year-old away from the dog and saying “get out of here.”
According to a veterinary who examined the dog, it suffered deep gashes to its head and bleeding in one of its eyes, and was clearly in a state of shock.
The 68-year-old is due to face a prosecutor on animal abuse charges.
