Meimarakis set to announce candidacy Thursday

New Democracy’s current leader, Evangelos Meimarakis is expected to announce Thursday his intention to contest the conservative party’s leadership in a vote due to take place later this year.

Former administrative reform minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was the first to announce his candidacy last week. He was joined over the weekend by Central Macedonia governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas.

Meimarakis, 61, took over as ND leader when Antonis Samaras resigned following the July 5 referendum.

Meanwhile, regional governor for central Greece, Costas Bakoyannis and former Central Macedonia governor Panayiotis Psomiadis both said Wednesday they will not run as candidates.

Candidates have to declare their interest in contesting the leadership by October 2. Each candidate needs to be backed by at least 50 members of New Democracy’s political committee.
