Refuse collectors plan protest over loss of ‘unhealthy’ status

The union representing local authority workers, POE-OTA, said Friday that it will stage a protest outside the Labor Ministry in central Athens on Tuesday in opposition to the government’s plans to stop classifying refuse collection as an unhealthy and arduous profession, which allows workers to retire early.

“Some people fail to realize the daily working conditions for those who work in the municipal sanitation services and want to make them work until the are 67 when many are unable to reach even 60,” said POE-OTA in a statement.

The union said it would use garbage collection trucks in Tuesday’s protest.
