Cost of public transport to rise next year

The cost of public transport is to rise from January 1, Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis said on Monday.

The government official said that there would be a 10 percent rise due to the increase in value-added tax but did not clarify if there would be a further increase beyond that.

He said that the government aims to limit the rise in travelcards, which Spirtzis says are used more regularly by commuters. Currently, a single ticket, which lasts for 70 minutes, costs 1.20 euros. A five-day travelcard costs 10 euros.
